Проповідь на 5ту Неділю після П‘ятдесятниці 2022 & і фільм “Екзорцист”
Деякі з вас чули цe євангельськe оповідання вже не раз. І ви собі кажете: «О так, це про тих свиней і дияволів, які входять у них, і вони тонуть». Дехто може сказати це з деякою нудьгою. Так, я це добре знаю. Я хочу сказати, що якщо ви ще ніколи не пізнали безпосердну дійсність диявола, то ви ще не знаєте цієї історії до тої мірищо ви думаєте. Ці два біснуваті – це страхіття. Вони є втіленням страшного демонського світу.
Якби хтось хотів відтворити цю сцену у фільмі, потрібно було б знайти спосіб щоб створити жах цієї ситуації. І диявол, і пекло – це щось жахливе, страшне.
Було вже кілька фільмів про екзорцизм – деякі новіші, а також є класичний, потужний фільм 1973 року під назвою “Екзорцист”. Молода дівчина Лінда Блер грає роль дівчини одержимої дияволом. Це, мабуть, найстрашніший фільм, який я коли-небудь бачив. Настільки страшний він був, що мені було важко заснути тієї ночі. І все ж таки я вважаю цей фільм дуже якісним, тому що він точно відобразив жахливу дійсність диявола. Демонське у цьому фільмі не миле, не елегантне і не ввічливе, але тут демонське є огидне, злобне і страшне.
Тож якби мені довелося найняти когось, щоб зняти фільм про сьогоднішнє євангеліє — Ісуса та двох біснуватих, я б звернувся до продюсерів фільму «Екзорцист». Вони б точно відтворили це демонське, бісівське.
Є також більш сучасний фільм, фільм про Бетмена, добре відомий під назвою «Темна ніч», (The Dark Night) у якому зображена фігура диявола на ім’я Джокер, який є огидним, злобним і страшним. Він аж дуже страшний, тому що в ньому є те демонське. Це ще один сильний фільм, оскільки він показує жахіття диявола. Продюсери «Темної ночі» були б ще одним добрим кандидатом, щоб спробувати створити настрій сьогоднішнього євангелія на фільмі.
Коли зло представлено як щось погане, це добрий фільм, який представляє нам дійсність. Коли доброта представлена як щось почесне, а не мізерне, то це теж добре. Фільм є недобрий і морально шкідливий, коли добро представлене як щось слабке, нецікаве, а злоба представлена як цікава, приваблива.
Також є питання як представлено надприродний світ. Будь то ангели, чи дияволи, чи Бог, якщо фільм представляє їх як справді існуючі, тоді цей фільм є духовно правдивим. Якщо фільм представляє надприродне життя як неіснуюче, але завжди як вияв психологічних проблем, тоді цей фільм був би духовно фальшивим. Прикладом такого поганого фільму може бути фільм «Ангели і демони», фільм зроблений на підставі книжки Дена Брауна.
У фільмі «Екзорцист» надприродний світ представлений дуже реально, настільки реально, що стає страшно. У фільмі є молодий священик, який має сумніви щодо існування надприродного світу, тому він дуже старається зрозуміти поведінку молодої одержимої дівчинки на медично-психологічному рівені, а умикає будь яке духовне пояснення. Коли цей молодий священик, який сумнівається, бачить, як старший священик, досвідчений екзорцист, починає молитися над дівчинкою, і приводить зміну у її стані та допомагає молодій дівчині, молодший священик має навернення і переходить від свого виключно натуралістичного способу розуміння світу до прийняття існування духовного світу. .
Сьогодні можна знайти не один коментар Біблії, який намагається пояснити кожне чудо в Біблії натуралістичним способом. Іншими словами, вони стараються заперечити чудо, заперечуючи надприродне пояснення.
Йде боротьба у богословському світі. Чи є надприродне життя? Чи диявол є страшний? Відповідаю – так і так. Щоб переконатися в цьому, ви можете подивитися на один із тих сильних фільмів, які представляють надприродний світ як правдивий, і не нехтують духовний світ.
Щоб боротися з дияволом, треба мати дві речі на увазі, а саме,
1) що диявол існує і
2) що диявол є нашим ворогом і хоче нас знищити будь-якою ціною.
Пам’ятаймо слова святого Павла: «Нам треба боротися не проти тіла й крови, а проти начал». Слово “начал“ тут треба розуміти як армії демонів. Частина нашого духовного життя це наша духовна боротьба зі злими духами. Отче наш визволи нас від лукавого. Амінь.
Sermon for the 5th Sunday after Pentecost 2022 & the movie “The Exorcist”
Some of you have heard this Gospel story a few times. And you say: “Oh yeah it’s about the pigs and devils going into them and they drown.” We can say that with a somewhat bored attitude. Yeah I know this one. I would like to argue that if you have not experienced the horror of the devil then you really don’t know this story as well as you think you do. Those two demon possessed fellows are scary. They represent the horror of the demonic world.
If one wanted to capture this scene in a movie, one would have to find a way to create the horror of that situation. Both the devil and hell are the most horrific, scary realities in existence.
There have been some movies on exorcisms – some newer ones and then there is the classic, great movie of 1973 called The Exorcist. A young girl Linda Blair plays the role of a girl possessed by the devil. It’s probably the scariest movie I have ever seen. So much so that I had a hard time falling asleep that night. And yet I call that movie great because it captured the horrific reality of the devil accurately. The demonic in this movie is not cute, not elegant nor suave, but the demonic is repulsive, evil and scary.
So if I had to hire someone to make a movie about today’s gospel – Jesus and the two demoniacs, I would go to the producers of The Exorcist. They would represent the demonic accurately.
There is also a more modern movie, a Batman movie, well known, called “The Dark Night”, that has a devil figure called the Joker who is ugly, mean and scary. He is creepy scary because there is something demonic in him. That is another great movie because it shows the horror of the devil. The producers of The Dark Night would be another good candidate to try to create the mood of today’s gospel on film.
When evil is presented as something bad then it’s a good movie that represents the truth. When goodness is presented as something honourable and not sappy then that is also good. What is not good and rather confusing is when goodness is presented as something uncool or evil is presented as something cool.
Also there is the issue of how the supernatural is presented. Be it angels or devils or God, if a movie presents these as true realities then that movie is metaphysically true. If a movie presents the supernatural as not existing but always a manifestation of a psychological problem, then that movie would be metaphysically false. An example of a bad movie of that kind would be the movie Angels and Demons based on Dan Brown’s book of the same title.
In the movie The Exorcist, the supernatural reality is presented as real and so real that you become scared. In the movie there is a young priest who has doubts about the reality of the supernatural and so he tries very hard to understand the young possessed girl’s behaviour in natural terms, in psychological terms and not in spiritual terms. When this young doubting priest sees an older priest, an experienced exorcist, begin to pray and make a difference and help the young girl, the younger priest has a conversion from his exclusively naturalistic way of understanding the world to accepting the existence of a spiritual world.
In our world today there are commentaries of the Bible that try to explain every supernatural event in the Bible in a naturalistic way. In other words they try to explain the supernatural away.
There is a battle about today’s Gospel. Is the supernatural true? Is the diabolical scary? My answer is yes and yes. To be more convinced of that you might want to see one of those great movies that represent the supernatural world in an accurate way and not in a dismissive way.
To do battle with the devil we must accept two things:
1) that the devil is real and
2) that the devil is our enemy and wants to harm us at all costs.
Let us remember what St Paul said: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities.” “Principalities” means armies of demons. Part of our spiritual journey is our spiritual battle against evil spirits. Our Father deliver us from the evil one. Amen.
